Uplift Podcast Spotlights Cawthon’s Inclusion Expertise (and Is Fully Accessible!)

The Uplift, a podcast that seeks to unleash the power of women’s leadership in higher education, interviewed Stephanie Cawthon, PhD, on the episode “Planning for Access: Teaching and Leading for Engagement and Inclusion.”

Host Carole Chabries, PhD, shares Dr. Cawthon’s love of Priya Parker’s book The Art of Gathering (by creating spaces where people feel included and purposeful) and her commitment to accessibility (by making sure The Uplift was fully accessible).

Accessible Podcast Experience

“Finally! A fully accessible podcast guest experience. I'm so excited to share this podcast episode with you!” Dr. Cawthon wrote on LinkedIn

“As a deaf person, podcasts are often inaccessible. As a guest, I want deaf and hearing audiences to both have access. I am very happy that The Uplift made this happen,” said Dr. Cawthon, who shares her tips about how to host a deaf podcast guest in her website’s media room

Tune In

The episode is online with a transcript and additional resources and readings. It is also available on the host platform Buzzsprout and as a video podcast on Vimeo. Dr. Cawthon used American Sign Language (ASL) for the interview and was joined by her ASL interpreters, Amanda Ford Katz and Liz Weston, whose voices listeners hear in the audio.

Innovative Engagement

Drs. Chabries was interested in how Dr. Cawthon uses her theater experience as a stage manager and her lifelong love of teaching to find innovative ways to engage students, colleagues, and the greater community.

Dr. Cawthon shared her strategies for engaging students online and in person, planning collaborative meetings, and honing leadership skills.
